Summer Sun For Everyone – Accessible Parks in Birmingham

At Stechford Mobility, we believe that a wheelchair or mobility scooter should allow you to travel anywhere you like. Birmingham is a fantastic city to travel around in for anyone using a mobility aid, thanks in part to the many disabled access friendly parks. Here are four of the best accessible parks in the Birmingham area. Enjoy sun, fun, food and nature this summer!

Botanical Gardens and Glasshouses

Westbourne Road, Edgbaston, B15 3TR

The Botanical Gardens are a Regency era marvel built in 1832. Set in a lush 15 acres of grounds, the glasshouses are home to over 1000 tropical, subtropical and desert plants, as well as its very own butterfly house. Access is via double automatic doors, and mobility scooter hire is available. In the park there are many shady areas, perfect for a rest or a snooze on hot days. The surrounding lawns are big enough for entire families to enjoy a picnic.

Eastside City Park

Curzon Street, Birmingham, B4 7XG

For an ultramodern inner city park experience, you can do no better than Eastside City Park. With stylish seating spread out along a polished concrete boulevard, two pools and stretches of flat green grass, it is a brilliant little getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. There is even a science garden, which is ideal for small children to explore. The park adjoins the ThinkTank Birmingham Science Museum, so there are cafes and toilets on hand at all times. Of course, all these features are fully accessible for wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

Edgbaston Reservoir

Reservoir Road, Ladywood, Birmingham, B16 9EE

With its level ground and accessible visitor’s centre, Edgbaston Reservoir is a brilliant spot to sit back and forget you are in the middle of a busy city. Sailors, rowers and sea cadets are always on the water adding a touch of action to the reservoir’s serene atmosphere. The many seats and picnic benches make visiting with friends a pleasure, and it only takes 25 minutes to stroll around the water.

Winterbourne House and Gardens

58 Edgbaston Park Road, Birmingham, B15 2RT

In 1903, industrialist John Nettlefold built an Edwardian style home in a leafy suburb of Birmingham for his family. In the 21st century, Winterbourne House and Botanical Garden is open to the public and makes for a beautiful visitor attraction all year round. To get the most out of your visit, however, the summer months are surely the best. Expect lush foliage and a pleasant tea room terrace with a menu of British teatime favourites. The ground floor of the house is accessible for wheelchairs, but the surrounding grounds are accessible to all, including mobility scooters.
