Looking After Your Mobility Scooter in Winter

Looking After Your Mobility Scooter in Winter

The Christmas holidays are one of the best times to visit friends and family, but you must take care when venturing out during the winter months. The cold weather can take its toll on your mobility scooter, and you’ll need to take extra care, performing additional checks, to ensure your scooter works at its best.

Give us a call on 0121 371 0780 if you want to ask about our mobility scooters, we have a wide range available at our showroom.

In this article, we’ll explain how to look after your mobility scooter over winter.

Batteries

The batteries are perhaps the most important component of your mobility scooter, but they’re also the most vulnerable to the cold. Taking care of your batteries will ensure your mobility scooter is always ready to go as soon as you need it.

Charge your batteries regularly

Batteries can become damaged and lose their maximum charge if not charged regularly. Charge your batteries regularly to keep them in their best condition. Even if your mobility scooter is dormant for many months, you should still check on the battery and charge it when needed.

This will ensure that your scooter is charged and ready to use right away.

Leave your batteries charging until the last possible moment

Charging the battery will help to keep it warm when the weather outside is cold. A cold battery is more prone to damage and will have a reduced range. Keeping the battery charged and warm will ensure you get to and from your destination safely.

Tyres

Check tyres regularly

Tyres are prone to damage during the colder months. This is the time where you should be regularly checking your tyres for any wear or tear.

Check tyre pressure regularly

Suitable tyre pressure is critical for ensuring they provide sufficient grip in icy conditions. Check that your tyres have suitable pressure before starting any journey.

Keeping dry

Dry off after being out in the rain / snow

It’s important to dry off your mobility scooter after every use to prevent the body from rusting. This is most important during the winter months where the chances of rain and ice is high.

Add a protective cover to your control panel / scooter

The control panel is one of the most important components of your mobility scooter. Keeping it is dry is key to ensuring your mobility scooter functions correctly. A waterproof cover will protect the control panel in all weather.

Keeping clean

Clean after every use

Give your scooter a quick clean after each use to remove mud and debris. A build-up of dirt can find its way into key components and cause damage.

Storage

Store your scooter in a dry, indoor space

To prevent rust, keep your scooter dry by storing it indoors, preferably in a shed or garage (or a mobility scooter garage). If you are unable to store it inside, at least use a scooter cover to protect it from the weather.
