How to Avoid Pressure Selling When Buying a Mobility Scooter or Stairlift

Mobility scooters and stairlifts are used by thousands of adults of every day. They are critical pieces of equipment and require extensive research and consideration before purchase. Unfortunately, unscrupulous companies target vulnerable people and pressure them into making on-the-spot decisions. The team at Ideas In Action have put together the following guide to help you avoid pressure selling when purchasing mobility equipment.

What tactics do salespeople use to pressure sell?

There are a few tactics used to sell mobility scooters or stairlifts that you should be wary of. It’s important to recognise these tactics and stay vigilant to the prospect of getting ripped off.

1) The salesperson may claim that their product is ‘the best’ on the market and may even attempt to back up their claim with data and statistics. This puts undue pressure on a customer to buy from them in fear of purchasing an inferior product. It’s important to stay sceptical. Research is key; note down their claims and research them for yourself.

2) The salesperson may claim ‘this is a one-time offer’. This is a tactic used to pressure customers into making an on-the-spot decision. Often the offer isn’t one time only and is usually an indicator of a subpar product.

3) The salesperson may attempt to guilt you. They may claim that purchasing their mobility scooter or stairlift will help take the burden off of your friends and family. Do not succumb to this pressure. Recognise that people willing to stoop to these levels do not have your best interests at heart.

Tips for dealing with a high-pressure salesperson

If you are reluctant to make a purchase and are unsure of how to proceed, consider the following tips.

1) State that you are unable to make a decision right now and ask for more time to consider their offer. Note down their name and contact details and assert that you will contact them if you wish to proceed with the purchase. It is important that you conduct thorough research into the product and the claims of the salesperson before you purchase.

2) Ask the salesperson if you can see their licence details. This will help you to determine whether they are working on behalf of a legitimate business. If they are unable to produce the necessary licenses or proof, politely decline their offer stating that you only deal with legitimate businesses.Ask to get their statements in writing. Getting an agreement in writing gives you greater security. Verbal agreements can easily be rescinded.

3) Check to see if there is a trial period. Get this information in writing and ask for the full terms. A trial period will help you to make an informed decision.
