Getting a Mobility Scooter or Powered Wheelchair on the Motability Scheme

You don’t have to pay the upfront costs of a new mobility scooter or wheelchair when you buy through the Motability scheme. Instead, you can take advantage of easy finance options, fantastic service and insurance, repairs and maintenance as standard. Ideas in Action are proud to offer this money saving plan for all qualifying customers. So, let’s find out what the Motability scheme can do for you.

How does it work?

Motability is a leasing scheme that allows you to exchange your government funded mobility allowance for a new mobility scooter or motorised wheelchair. You are eligible if you currently receive the enhanced rate of allowance as part of:

If your child currently receives the enhanced rate of DLA or PIP, you can apply for Motability on their behalf in order to secure a mobility scooter or motorised wheelchair on the leasing scheme.

Finances

An upfront non-refundable payment of £100 is applicable to secure your chosen scooter or wheelchair, and weekly payments are automatic after this deposit. Scooters and wheelchairs are available on a three year lease, and custom-made wheelchairs are available on a five year lease. The scooter or wheelchair is leased from Motability and they arrange for the relevant amount to be paid directly to them each month.

A majority of scooters and wheelchairs cost less to lease per week than the allowance you will receive, including long-range scooters and wheelchairs. This means that your remaining allowance is paid directly into your bank account and you can spend it as you please.

What is included?

When you lease a scooter or wheelchair through Motability, the price you pay includes:

  • A new scooter or motorised wheelchair of your choice every 3-5 years
  • Breakdown assistance from Motability Assist
  • Comprehensive insurance cover
  • Finance arrangements
  • Servicing, maintenance and repair costs
  • Replacement components such as batteries and tyres

Who is eligible?

As stated above, to be eligible for the Motability leasing packages you must be receiving the enhanced allowance on either DLA or PIP payments, or be receiving an armed forces related payment. DLA and PIP benefits are categorised as two rates, the standard rate and the enhanced rate. It is the enhanced rate that qualifies you for Motability leasing.

When will the lease end?

After three years your lease will come to an end and you’ll get the choice of a new scooter or wheelchair. The Motability scheme will get in touch with you before the lease ends to discuss your next options.
